My Grandfather James McKeown of Gilgandra NSW served in the Boer War I understand that he was discharged 10/1/1901 . I am trying to find what unit he was attatched too . Various searches seem to indicate that there were two James McKeown from NSW.
I have one as James McKeown Trooper 2217 3rd Contingent NSW Mounted riffles .
I have been given another number as 574.
My James was born 1877, Burrandong NSW Fathers name John McKeown.
I would appreciate if anyone could assist me . He was one of the Cooee marchers at Gilgandra in 1915 and served in the 45th Battalion in France

Welcome to the forum. "2217 Tpr. J.M.McKeown of 3NSWMR" served with E Squadron and his occupation was grazier, born 1877, from Mudgeee, NSW with NoK in Gilgandra.
I had a quick trawl through Murray's "Official Records" and also the OZ-Boer database. I could not locate another McKeown in an NSW unit. Where did the "474" you quoted come from?
If you have not already done so, I would suggest you look on the AWM site for any WW1 enlistment papers for your GF. He may have recorded there the unit he served in.
Regards
IL.
