Hiya. I have medals for Pte Joseph Binns (my great uncle) and all his discharge papers recording his service.

Enlisted on 16th March 1894 with the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars (also called 4th Remounts???). Served 8 years 217 days in the colours including in Boer War in South Africa in 1901 and 1902. Transferred to Section B Army Reservists on 18 October 1902 and served 3 years and 148 days. Discharged 15 March 1906.

Received Queens South Africa medal with Clasps Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony and Kings South Africa Medal with Clasps 1901 and 1902 Enlisted again at Guildford 21 April 1906 again in 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars and served 1 year and 222 days in the colours. Transferred to Section D Army Reservists and served 8 years and 107 days. Discharged 15 March 1916. Received 1914 Star Medal and Clasp 5th August – 22nd November 1914 and British War Medal and Victory Medal.

You show on your QSA Roll record he was previously called Calder. I also have traced him back through the family and there was a Joseph Binns born in Littlethorpe, Ripon in 1871 that fits the family records but he is shown on censuses being a commercial traveller in Harrogate in 1901 when he was in South Africa. In 1911 Census he is shown living in Dorking as a butler (his army papers recorded him as a valet so this may be a match)

So could you give me any advice on how I can find out more about the Calder reference and his 8th Hussars record?

Many thanks. David Binns

There is no entry in the roll for Calder or indeed any other information.

Thanks David. Do the records show where he was stationed in UK and overseas. I believe at start of WW1 he was in Egypt. Do any documents show he was married to an Alice Lydia ?? as it appears he married her in 1893 before he enlisted in1894?
