Could I ask for suggestions?
I would like to read about the use of the observation balloon which accompanied Buller to the upper Tugela; specifically the dates 16 - 25 Jan 1900. Does anyone know of a good primary source, e.g. an account by an Engineer who was on the campaign?
thanks
Rob

In the Times History Vol III pages 241- 242 there is a passage regarding the balloon reporting the movement of considerable numbers of Boers moving Eastwards along Lyttelton's front. The movement was confirmed by Bethune's scouts. That was on 23/1/1900 and took place during Lyttleton's "demonstrations" between 18th Jan - 23 rd Jan.
The index to TH has a number of references to Balloons on operations. Probably Maurice (Official History) has more.

IL.

Dear IL
many thanks, that is useful.
I can't see Maurice Vol II Ch 20-22 on this site - is it something I am doing wrong?

Rob,

The PDFs for all Maurice's volumes are available in angloboerwar.com/books/119-maurice-histo...00-maurice-volume-ii . I only have text for volume 1.

I see now that the PDF icon on the right of the page is a tad small (!) so I will look to enlarge these. If you can click on the minuscule PDF icon on the right, the PDF will open.

Here is a link to chapter 22: angloboerwar.com/images/pdf/maurice02-22.pdf

The quickest way to open chapter 23 (when you have chapter 22 open) is to edit the URL.

I have edited the page to reduce some of the table text. The PDF icons are now normal size.
