I am decedent of William Alfred Lyte (Service number 4444) who in turn is related to the author of Abide with Me Henry Francis Lyte .I have found out lot about his service in WW1 and discovered that he also served in the Boer war .I am now keen to find out more about his service ,He was a shoeing smith at Remount Depot and was awarded a medal and natal clasp .i have managed to find the Roll of individuals entitled to the South African Medal and clasps as a learner I would appreciate any information or advice that anybody could give me

The Remount Department medal roll (WO100/234p22) lists his Natal clasp QSA. A note suggests he came from the 125th Battery RFA.

I checked FindMyPast for service papers and none are available. Did anything survive for his Great War service?

I do not know of many avenues for further information on his Boer War service.

The 4444 numbered Shoeing Smith / Farrier Sergeant has the name Walter Joseph Lyte

and according to Lyte family tree on Ancestry is younger brother of William Alfred Maximillian Lyte
