My Great-UncleArthur Ernest Briggs joined the Honourable Artillery Company and was one of the Company’s quota of 40 men towards the Infantry and Mounted Infantry of the City Imperial Volunteers (CIV), the formation of which had just been announced. The final contribution of the Company to the C.I.V, including drafts, was 154 men. One of original 24 Mounted Infantry (the full number allowed) was Uncle Ernest. This was supplemented by a draft raising the total to 30 men.
The C.I.V Mounted Infantry, of which the H.A.C provided No 1 Section of No 1 Company, was sworn in on January 4th. 1900, and embarked on the “R.M.S Briton” on the 13th.
