Just recently - the last 10 months - there have been a number of TG medals coming up for auction i.e. at DNW & Spinks. The feeling was that these medals were understated in terms of what they were selling for. However, after last night on the SA BidorBuy website, a TG medal to the Springbokfontein Town Guard went for ZAR 24,000 or £ 1,263!

This is astonishing for any Town Guard Medal other than a Mafeking TG. There may only have been 12 awarded (2 returned) but I have TG's where there were only 8 issued and if I were offered £ 400 I'd consider that a very good offer.

I agree with your comments Ian..... But with the location of the sale there might be an incidence of a family connection to the buyer...… Mike

Thanks for replying Mike. It was really strange because the price was around ZAR 9800 (approx £ 515) from our friend Rory which was still high, and then bang! It suddenly jumped to ZAR 23999 and was outbid at ZAR 24000. Completely non-nonsensical to me. I have never seen a TG (other than MAF TG) go over the ZAR 12,000 mark. There's hope for my collection of TG's yet!

It was insane Ian - I was bidding on behalf of a friend whose PC was out of action. We just watched in awe as the price climbed. Madness really - I seem to remember a Zastron (I think it was) TG medal to my surname go on CC for about 8000. And I think there were only around 8 issued.

I think last night was about who had the biggest pair....

I did think it strange that you were bidding on it! Anyway, it will be one of those mysteries but certainly someone has a very big pair!

Makes me remember a number of years ago, I purchased a plastic ziplock bag containing 6 (4 TG 2 DMT) medals from a coin dealer for 50 Pounds..... The reason he said they were so cheap was because they had no bars...…
