Hi to you all, I used to collect medals and militaria back in my youth and now that I'm retired with more time on my hand I thought I'd rekindle my interest. I've regularly browsed through the local auction catalogues and generally dismissed post WW1 medals with no inscriptions but didn't want to splash out too much money. On this basis I realised that any thoughts on getting back into collecting wasn't an option so upped my planned budget to a more reasonable level.
Well I recently spent it all on a pair of Boer war medals and whilst researching the medals came across this excellent forum and decided that I should concentrate my collecting to late 19th and early 20th century medals.
The medal pair are a QSA medal ( CC clasp) and an Edward vii St Johns Ambulance medal both named to 1827 Pte John Stanton , the QSA is inscribed St Johns Ambulance and the St Johns medal is inscribed Welbeck Div. I have found that John Stanton is named on the memorial plague at Welbeck Abbey and would appreciate any advice on how to find out more about John Stanton. I will also post an introduction in the St johns Ambulance section.

A very quick welcome to the forum, Scooby Doo! An excellent decision to focus more on the 19th and 20th Century medals too :)

Hi Scooby-Doo

From 'my man on the ground"

31 issued to the Welbeck Division of which 7 are known John possible had a brother Charles (1807 Pte.) Certainly John was the 1639 member to sign on & Charles 1641. Medals previously spotted in a draw in the St. John Museum.

The Welbeck Division were made up of employees of the Duke of Portland that lived on his "Model Estate" at Welbeck Abbey. The Division was 80 strong of which 33 went to South Africa. The Division was sponsored by the Duke of Portland & he may well have sponsored the Division in South Africa

Welcome aboard.

Thanks for the reply, I did notice on the roll of honour that there were 2 Stantons listed. Amazing what information you can find - if they were spotted in a drawer in the museum I hope they haven't been stolen to end up in the auction !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
