I have modified the Name Search to enable searching by rank.

It is now possible for search for a rank but it is difficult to separate out Sergeant Majors from this list and also those killed but not in the Boer War.

Hello Peter

One man you are missing is Railway Pioneer Regiment BTTN 2 Fisher John Francis Major DoW 20/11/1901 Standerton.

I have 66 Major & Brevet Major KIA or DoW on The Register. One I have not included is CW Hulse - he was a Lt in the Army, the rank in which he served in the Field , but a Major in the Militia.

Hi Peter I'm researching Major Francis Charles M Ford and I am finding contradictions regarding where he was killed. From your record, the following:-
59. Major F C Minshull-Ford, C Div SAC, killed in action at Mooimeisjesfontein on 17 October 1901
From a site called gloster.tripod.com I found the following (I suspect they meant Jagersfontein):-
MINSHULL-FORD - Major Francis Charles, D.S.O. - South African Constabulary
Killed in action at Mooline Tagersfontein. 18th Oct. 1901. Aged 31. Son of Captain J.R. Minshull-Ford (8th Foot), of Llwyngwern, Montgomeryshire. Born 1870. Served in the 2nd Highland Light Infantry 1892-97.
According to family records, he was shot and killed at Agents Farm, Delmas and is buried there. Mooimeisjesfontein, Jagersfontein and Delmas are a long way from each other and, unfortunately, there are no longer relatives alive to speak to.
Any input welcome, Thanks.

Sir

My information was taken from Palmer's Casualty Roll, but I will see what else I can find and get back to you soon. As far as I am aware there are a few Mooimeisjesfonteins (Pretty Young Woman's Spring, roughly translated) in South Africa.

Best regards
Peter

Woodhead,

The Gloster's information is taken from Dooner's book.

Here is his entry from The Times, 22 Oct 1901

I could be wrong, but I don't think Mooline Tagesfontein is a real place. I wonder if an OCR scanner has mis-read Mooimeisjesfontein?
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
