Hi

Can anyone supply an analysis of officer casualties by rank please? In particular I am trying to find out how many Majors were killed in action or died of wounds.

I see that Amery in the Times History of the War in South Africa at Appendix III on pages 24-25 of Volume VII sets out a list of casualties for those killed or died of wounds, those wounded and those missing or prisoners, but I am looking for a more detailed analysis, particularly by rank.

Best regards
Peter

Peter,

I think it is 5.

Johnston-Smyth T R Major, DLI, Killed in action Potgieter's Drift 05/02/1900
Marquis of Winchester Major, Coldstream Gds, Killed in action Magersfontein 11/12/1899
Wallnutt C C Major, Gordons, Killed in action Ladysmith 06/01/1900
Strong S P Major, Scottish Rifles, Died of wounds Spion Kop 24/01/1900
Vallentin J M Major, Som LI, Killed in action Near Oliphant's River 04/01/1902

But that seems a very low number.

Hi

David, thanks for the quick response.

I think there is one other: Major J Hanwell, R.A. killed in action near Ventersburg on 30 October 1900.

Is anyone aware of other such casualties?

Best regards
Peter
