Good day all. My name is Dudley Lee. I'm no expert at anything "Boer war" - all I can say is that I have read one or two books on the war, I have an English name and surname but most of my ancestors were in fact Boere. I own a 1901 Lee Enfield no1* which I have (travesty!) converted/sporterised for springbok hunting. I have a few war medals which I need to dust off and see who they were awarded to...and during which war!
I live in Cape Town, work for a legal firm, too old now to worry much about my looks. I joined this website as I ave an item abandoned by a friend. I never bothered for about four years about all the stuff he left in my safe with the instruction to keep what I want and discard the rest.
At last I decided to look at all the stuff and discovered a very interesting ammo belt among all the stuff. So, this seems to be the site where I can get my questions answered, hopefully!

Welcome, Dudley.
Your mention of having English names but many Boer ancestors reminds me of Stuart Cloete, who changed his name to honour his own part-Afrikaans ancestry. He was one of South Africa's finest authors; a particularly good historical novelist, mainly set during the Great Trek, and the Anglo-Boer wars. His "Rags Of Glory" is perhaps the finest ever written about that conflict. (It likely inspired me to write my own, "KRUGER'S GOLD: A novel of the Anglo-Boer War.") If you have not already done so, I recoment you read Stuart Cloete's books.

Hi Breaker, to my discredit I must admit that I have not read Cloete's book. I shall do so in the near future. Is your book still available? I must admit that I read very little fiction.
Regarding the Kruger gold, my ex's uncle has a farm at Schagen jst outside of Nelspruit. A guy used to pitch his tent on the farm every so often as he said the Kruger millions are buried on that farm. I don't know if he ever found anything of interest on the farm, but I really hope he does, if he is still at it!
We South Africans are in reality all relatively closely related. And whereas most people (definitely Afrikaners) think that they have mostly Dutch blodd coursing through their veins, they are very wrong. But let's not start a big argument!

Hello, Dudley; me again.
Just a follow-up on our earlier discussion of ABW book authors.
I wonder, have you read any of these?
THE BOERS IN WAR, by Howard C. Hillegas.
Published in 1900, long out of date, but fascinating first-hand account by an American journalist.
COMMANDO, by Denys Reitz. Another oldie, but a fascinating classic account of guerilla warfare in the ABW.
THE ANGLO BOER WAR, by F. Pretorius; pub. 1985.
One of my favorite novels of the conflict, RAGS OF GLORY, by Stuart Cloete.
Plus my really personal favorite novel, of course, KRUGER'S GOLD.
