Driscoll's Scouts 4 years 5 months ago #69509

I have learned that my Grandfather Served in Driscol's Scouts as 37692 Cpl George Henry Waterman. I knew that he fought in the Boer War but he never spoke much about it. I have seen his name in the book that you have on this site but there seem to be an awful lot of Driscol's Scouts. In my mind I had envisaged a small group of up to about a 100 but there seems to be circa 30 per page and over a hundred pages. I would be grateful for any advice, assistance to gain more information and in particular if it is possible to but a replica cap badge and, if medals etc were issued, maybe but a replica of that also. Thank you very much. Brian Waterman

Brian,

Yes, Driscoll's Scouts was much more than a small band of scouts. Have a look at this page and the nominal rolls which contains one entry for George Henry Waterman in roll 1 and one for G W Waterman in roll 2. www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/so...329-driscolls-scouts

According to the rolls, your gf earned the clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, SA01 and SA02.

He also served as no 145 in Malcolm's Scouts about which very little is known (to me at least)

When I next go the Archives, I will see if there is an attestation paper for him.

Replica medals are available. For example: bigburymint.com/product/queens-south-afr...medal-qsa-full-size/

Cap badges are certainly available but probably only the originals, eg www.angloboerwar.com/forum/21-uniforms-b...iscoll-s-scouts#3825

Kind regards
David

Thank you David, My GF certainly got about a bit as he was also 27097 Gunner in Royal Field Artillery. I would be keen to know if copies of clasps and/or written M>I>D> are available. I want to pass this info onto the family to be passed on. Thanks for all the links which I will now start looking at and I shall also see if I can dig anything up about Malcolm's Scouts. I do have a programme for a concert at Sandhurst where he was listed as Sgt Waterman singing comic songs and monologues which he did a lot when we were young, especially Christmas. I had better get a move on as I was 85 earlier this month so time may be limited, he said cheerfully ! ! Thanks again David

Brian,

Very happy to help.

I checked and there are service papers for his time in the RFA. This can be accessed for free at the National Archives when it re-opens or on line for a fee at FindMyPast.

Best wishes
David
