does anyone know anything about the movements for the 44 (Suffolk) company 12th battalion IY

Enquiries of the movements and whereabouts of IY units are often difficult to answer; the members of the Companies/Squadrons commonly received State and Date clasps on their medal and the only way to get some idea of their likely movements is to check the SAFF Casualty lists. Sometimes, the movements of individual Companies/Squadrons can be checked by looking in the index of the Official History - or even that of the Times History. Both sources may be found in the "Books" section of the Main Menu.
Regarding the Stokes Brothers, a look in the medal roll WO100/125 (pages 285 and 295) shows that both brothers appear to have been part of the Second Contingent of IY and received the clasps "Orange Free State" and "South Africa 1901" on their QSA medals. There is a marginal comment about their services; Harry did 186 days in SA and Frank completed 193 days. I have attached cuts of both roll pages.

That is fantastic, thank you so much. I’m so happy just to find out something. You talk about looking at the medal roll and I guess the two pictures are taken from that. Where can I see that while page so I know what the ‘yes’ and ticks refers to?

As indicated, the cuts are taken from the medal rolls of the 44th Coy., IY. The "tick" usually indicates that a medal was issued and "yes" in the particular medal clasp column means that clasp was awarded. It is possible to see the actual medal roll pages. Go to the Research section of the Forum and scroll down to the National Archives post and follow the prompts. You are looking for WO100/125 pages 285 and 295.
It does appear that the Stokes brothers did not have an entirely happy time with the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa.

Thanks for the lead, I’ve found it in the archives and it makes very interesting reading. What gives you the impression things didn’t go well? Is it just the short service time? What do you think was average?
