I live in London and worked for the BBC World Service for 27 years before retiring in 2013. I write about South Africa and the Horn of Africa. I have published several books including: Promise and Despair: the first struggle for a non-racial South Africa, 1899 – 1914, Jacana Media, Johannesburg, 2016 and I am working on a biography of Dr Abdullah Abdurahman, the leader of the African Political Organisation. My interests are varied and I collect early South African photographs.
