I wondered if service records for individual troopers were available anywhere?

It depends which nationality. New Zealand has theirs in the NZ Archives. Australia has the post Federation enlistment papers in the Aust Archives. Our friends from the U K will be able to answer what is available there.

Surviving British Army and SAMIF are at Kew in WO96, WO97, WO126, WO128, WO363 and WO364, it all depends upon who you are looking for.
