My grandfather was Private Walter S Penny and was with the 38th Battery RFA transferred from the RHA. He joined up as a boy soldier aged 14 years and 9 months on the 05/07/1895.
He transferred to the RHA on the 09/10/1900He was in SA on the 19/06/01 and received the SA Medal with 5 Clasps. We do not have the Queens SA Medal.
I believe that he was discharged on the 04/7/1907.Shorncliffe with exemplanary conduct Ialso believe that the Clasps refer to the engagements that he may have been part of , perhaps anyone would be kind enough to forward any other information ?
His father was an RA pensioner and my father was REME, so I have the claim of being an Army Brat !
Thank you. Mandy

Hello, Mandy, and welcome to the group. Can't help with information on his clasps, hopefully someone else here will be able to.

As Berenice says, Welcome to the Forum. Can you tell us which battery your GF served in during his time in SA? Engagement/Battle clasps can indeed tell us about his time in SA; State and Date clasps less so.
Best regards
IL.

Welcome to the forum, Mandy.

Your GF had the regimental number 10212 and rank of Gunner.

He earned the QSA with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902.

His medal was issued 4 July 1905.

A remark on the supplementary roll for the RHA (WO100/132p230) says he worked on the pom pom guns.

The roll does not give any other details so it will not be easy to track down where he served beyond saying he served in the main seats of war during the conflict.

I cannot see any service papers online but you already have some details. Can I ask where these are from please?

I have searched my (incomplete) archive of past medal sales and not found his medal.

Best wishes
David
