Hi everybody,
I have been researching my family tree and came across a family member that served with the 1st battalion Border regiment in the boer war, Alexander Baty reg no 2977. I have found the medal rolls with his name and the medals and clasps he was awarded but very little other information of his militry service, I believe he was discharged possibly with TB and died in Carlisle workhouse in 1905.
Could somebody help me with where best to find more information aswell as a good of information regarding specific battles. His medals and clasps include, Queens SA medal, Cape colony, transvaal, tugela hights, relief of ladysmith, OFS and SA 01-02.
Many thank for you help.

Surviving service papers are in WO97, WO363 and WO364 at Kew and are available on line, assuming they no longer remain extant in this particular case, you can consult the battalions published regiment history as well as more general histories, such as John Stirling's Our Regiments in South Africa, it includes a very brief account of the battalion and is available on this site.

The regimental museum in Carlisle, when it reopens, might have information on him.

I'm not aware of any of the local newspaper archives being online, but they're available to view at Carlisle Library

Carlisle used to be so beautiful, with it's medieval lanes in the city centre, sadly long gone, but, at least the handsome castle remains and certainly, as a boy, I felt the regimental museum really quite impressive, although, rather small.

The account of the Border Regiment is here: www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/im.../535-border-regiment

The medal roll shows he was invalided home.

I cannot see any papers for him via FindMyPast.

In the Books section of the site are several works relating to the relief of Ladysmith.

A good starting point would be the Natal Campaign: www.angloboerwar.com/books/32-burleigh-the-natal-campaign
