Hello all,
I picked up a framed ribbon/helmet plate center at a local antique store. I'm certain the ribbons are repros but the center appears genuine.

I've been doing some research and am uncertain whether the ribbons actually belong with the RWR center. Maybe you can help.

Would it be possible for someone from RWR to have accumulated the ribbons shown? I'm thinking in the very least it would require movement from one battalion to another and being with one of the MI companies during the 2nd Boer War.

The medal ribbons are as follows: Queen's Sudan medal, Queen's South Africa medal, King's South Africa medal , India General Service medal(1908-35), Army Long Service and Good Conduct medal (pre 1917 ribbon) and the Khedive's Sudan medal. Such "long" groups were not all that uncommon in that era. The RWR were certainly in the Sudan, in South Africa, and on the NW Frontier in 1908. And being awarded a LSGC on top of those would not have been uncommon.

Thanks for the reply. This small collection had been a rabbit hole I've followed for a number of years that may end in futility.

As an American i dont fully understand British regimental traditions but my interest in this era has led my to try

My understanding is that it was not common to shift a soldier from one regiment to another against their will. What was the protocol for movement between battalions?

I believe the helmet center is an OR badge. If it is an Officer badge it may explain the appearance that said soldier would have served in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and/or possibly the 4th battalions.

Makes my head hurt.

Thanks again for your time and reply,
Wallace

Hello Wallace.
The ribbons shown as Linney has explained pertain to the following.
Queens Sudan Medal & the Khedives Sudan medal would be for actions at Atbara 8th of April 1898 and Khartoum 2nd of September 1898.
The 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment were present.
Queens South Africa & Kings South Africa pertains to the 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment who were in SA from the 16th Dec 1899. Mounted infantry companies of the 3rd and 4th battalions arrived in SA in 1901 and were heavily engaged in fighting.
The Northwest Frontier IGS medal was for service between 14th February & 31st of May. 1908 .This relates to the 1st battalion Royal Warwickshire Reg.
I do understand it can get a little difficult with battalions and such, but during WW1 it got a little harder to understand.
Have a look at this link and see what I mean!
www.longlongtrail.co.uk . and search for Royal Warwickshire regiment. I tried to link it but it wont play ball. Hope you enjoy your journey delving into the British Army regiments? Not too much of an issue with UK regiments today........we havn't got many left.
Best regards
Dave
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
