Hi - new to this and currently researching my Great Grandfather William Dais.

I have noted you have him listed in the third contingent but not in the Eighth contingent.

Information I have has him part of the North Island Regiment - B Squadron. His rank was Saddler-Sergeant. His Reg number 5157. Information I found on nzhistory.govt.nz/soldier/william-dais.

Was hoping the above information could be added to your records.

Also trying to find information about the medals he had been awarded. You have the KSA and QSA medals noted but wondering about which clasps and how do I locate such information.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Goanna

Hi Goanna,

Welcome to the Forum. The problem you are going to face, as alluded to by Dave, is that William Dais received an unnamed medal during the visit to New Zealand by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall in June 1901. Many recipeints of such unnamed medals later had theirs engraved privately, but that's by no means a certainty - basically you'll never know until it turns up.

He is entitled to the QSA as per Dave's post, and I have attached a photograph of him - just in case you didn't have one of him. It is taken from the Weekly Press newspaper of 21/3/1900.

His service file is here: www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullIte...20519615&digital=yes

Regards

Phil
