Hi

I recently acquired this group to Lt-Col John Hunter Dalgarno, O/C Border Mounted Rifles from 1924 to 1928.

The group consists of:

Military Cross GVR for GSWA
QSA- DoL, Transvaal, Laings Nek
Natal Rebellion 1906- Capt BMR
WW1 Trio
1935 Jubilee Medal
Colonial Aux Force LS Medal
Colonial Aux Force Officers Decoration

Extract from the NMR official history by Goetzsche gives this information:

Born in Perthshire, Scotland in 1872, John Hunter came to Natal in 1886.
He settled in the Dronkvlei area, joining that Troop of the B.M.R soon afterwards. He served in the Anglo Boer War (as a Corporal) , the 1906 Rebellion and in the 1915 German South West Africa campaign, by which time he had been commissioned.
Thereafter he joined the Middlesex Regiment and saw action as a Captain in the 3rd Battle of Ypres , Cambrai, 2nd Battle of the Somme and the Battle of the Lys. He was awarded the M.C. ( GSWA). On his return from military duty overseas, he continued his service with the 3rd Mounted Rifles ( N.M.R), commanding the Regiment from 1924 to 1928, when he retired.

I have been unable to find a photo of Dalgarno so far.

Regards
Adrian

Adrian,

I found an old poor copy of the 1913 SA Officers list which shows Dalgarno as a Captain with the 3rd NMR.

Not much but a copy of an old Doc.
