Dear Uniform Experts, can you please identify the Fusilier regiment of this Bandsman? His collar badges are the Fusilier flaming grenades and he displays the QSA and KSA Medals, the latter appears to only have one clasp, which I believe is rare. His Long Service & Good Conduct chevrons denote over 6 years service, but under 12 years I think? An expert in lady's Edwardian costumes dates this wedding pose photograph between 1902 and 1904. His dress tunic is I presume red, but the collar and cuff facings do not seem to be dark blue, but lighter, or certainly different to red. I understand that there were 7 or 8 Fusilier regiments extant at this time and that all served in the 2nd Boer War, but I think the Lancashire Fusiliers can be eliminated, which had white facings. The names of the two subjects are unknown. I look forward to any ideas, thanks Caldwell Lyndale.

Hi Caldwell,

Well I am no expert on uniform, but as far as I was aware Fusilier regiments either all had dark blue facings or at least all Royal regiments did.

There were eight Fusilier regiments serving in the Boer War (I'm not sure if there were more than eight in total anyway)

Lancashire Fusiliers
Northumberland Fusiliers
Royal Dublin Fusiliers
Royal Fusiliers (London)
Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers
Royal Munster Fusiliers
Royal Scots Fusiliers
Royal Welsh Fusiliers

I think the Lancashire's and Northumberland's had white facings.

Can anyone add anything else please?

Ian

Thank you Ian for replying, I did a bit more research yesterday and you are right, the Lancashire Fusiliers had white facings, but the Northumberland Fusiliers had green facings, the rest all blue facings. We believe that the soldier's surname is ROBINSON, but no forename known. But when looking at the QSA/KSA medal rolls on Ancestry there are always lots with this name for all the regiments listed. One query Boer War medal experts might know, is if the KSM on his chest has only one clasp, which is not easy to discern, but on enlargement of an enhanced version, seems to be the case, then how common is that for the KSA Medal? Cheers Lyndale Caldwell.

Due to certain factors, it was possible to be awarded the KSA with only one clasp; however, it was very uncommon. There is a thread on this site concerning that subject. Looking again at the pic, I am of the opinion that the KSA does have two clasps. There is quite a bit of reflection off the medal clasps (probably due to the professional photographer of the day using flash powder, plus the angle of the subject). For example, we really cannot discern how many clasps the are on his QSA.
Anyway, thanks for posting the pic of that happy couple.
Regards
IL.

Thank you LinneyL for your comment, because I too are still not convinced the KSA has only one clasp. I don't own the original print, but received a scan at a decent resolution, thus was surprised it would not show fine detail when enlarged. I suspect the person I'm helping has a 2nd generation scan, which I will now check out. With at least six fusilier regiment Boer War medal rolls to check on the surname ROBINSON, this could be a worthwhile investment of time if only one clasp, but an impossible task if two. Regards Lyndale Caldwell.
