Hello all. I am really into family history and whilst researching my tree I have come across documents that state my Great Grandfather James Bullions fought in the Boar war 1899-1902, James was born 1881 in Dunfermline Scotland but by 1891 aged 9 he was living with his family in Hatton Derbyshire. I know he came back unscathed from South Africa or so his WW1 records say.
He also went on to serve in WW1 in the Sussex and Manchester Regiments.
I was after advice really on how to search for any greater depth as to what he did in South Africa, which regiment he was in etc

Can I ask if your Great Grandfather was in the Royal Army Medical Corps whilst serving with the Manchester's? If yes, I have found a James Bullions RAMC who served in the Boer War.

Not sure if he served in Ramc but if its my G Grandfather he lived at Brickyard Cottages Hatton Derbyshire and his wife was Emily Bullions nee Broughton on his WW1 service record.

Think this is your G Grandfather. The recruiting officer did not know how to spell Dunfermline. He attested on 17th August 1898 in London where he worked as a barman in The Fountain in Shaftesbury Avenue. He appears to have resided in Burton-on-Trent!! He joined the MMS Corps two days later and after 49 days of drill was transferred to the RAMC on 6th October 1898. Unfortunately it does not tell you what happened next! I think your Great Grandfather was in the R A M C during the Boer War
He was a Private, service number 12062.
He was awarded the QSA medal with 5 clasps. Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Tugela Heights and Relief of Ladysmith. Also a K S A with 2 date clasps.
He went onto the Army reserves . Serving in WW1 as you mentioned with the 3rd Royal Sussex Regiment and the Manchester Regiment. See attached papers.
