I'd like to share a tip and see if anyone else has tips.
If you have a low resolution image, for example a photo or a map from the South African war, and want to look for a better one, try the free Tin Eye reverse image search site
tineye.com/
Drag your image (or copy image and paste from your screen) and TinEye will search billions of online images. You can then rank the results by image size to get the best one.
Note you may have to pay sites like Alamy or Getty. However, there is a misconception that Alamy, Getty, etc. own the copyright on their old photos. They don't. Copyright ceases 50 to 70 years after the death of the photographer, depending on the date of the photo - thereafter copyright is perpetually in the public domain. If someone uses the image in a new publication, they don't get a new copyright - only the original creator had copyright, and when it's expired nobody else can re-claim it. Alamy, Getty etc are simply charging for the convenience of supplying a high resolution image, but they do not own the copyright nor can they sell that to you. Though they do benefit from an atmosphere of ambiguity, for the public may respectfully assume the image belongs to them.
