I have been researching members of my family who fought in the Boer War. I am having difficulty finding any information regarding a greatx3 uncle. We have 2 medals for him, the Kimberley Star and QSA with clasp Defence of Kimberley which is inscribed Pte J Walker KImberley Town GD. What I don't know is how to find what regiment he would have been serving in when attached to the Kimberley Town Guard. His name was James Walker, born Feb 1866, in Beckermet, Cumberland. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Ali

Welcome Ali,
the Kimberley Town Guard had a strength of 1303 men.
You can read about the unit here
archive.org/details/colonialsinsouth00stiruoft/page/n6/mode/2up
on pages 199 to 200.

On Find My Past there are the attestation forms for a James Walker who signed the dotted line on 22nd September 1884 in Warrington aged 18 years and 9 months which means he could have been born very early in 1866 (if my maths is correct). His place of birth is given as Whitehaven in the County of Cumberland. His Regimental number is given as 709 and he enlisted in the 3rd Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment. His residential address is given as 8 Backshire Street, Whitehaven.
