Hi
Occasionally I break my own rules, and acquire a medal that doesn’t appear to offer anything special.

But this forlorn disc, named to 9292 Cpl T Farris, 1st Coy , 1 Btn IY is an exception.

He earned the clasps CC, OFS, TVL, SA1901
I will have the medal repaired.

He was awarded a DCM, gazetted 1902.

From Coombe Bisset, he wrote the following letter home :

[a

I am still trying to find out why the DCM was awarded?

Thanks
Adrian

Sometimes a real gem can be found - like yours. "9292 Pte. Farris, T ,1st Bn., IY" featured in the LG of 27/9/1901 and Army Order 15/02. Unfortunately, the Abbott DCM book does not list any details. I looked your man up in the Army Mentions on this site - but again, no details. The letter you found, however, certainly gives more than of a hint as to why a DCM was awarded.
Regards
IL.

Hi Adrian
You may have this information already? No mention of your man, however, a good overview of the Wiltshire IY

samilitaryhistory.org/vol021db.html

Also Corporal Farris IY records are available. Let me know if you need them uploading.
I believe he may have taken his family back to South Africa. And, possibly died there.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Hi Dave

Thanks very much, I would really appreciate the downloaded info if possible.
After your clue, I looked him up on NAAIRS and EGgsa, died in Durban in 1960.

Here is his gravestone:

Thanks again
Adrian

Hope these are readable for you Adrian?. Alas, no mention of his DCM award, but good to have, along with his soon to be restored QSA.

Kind regards

Dave
