Hello Janette,
I found a Thomas Carlyle born 1881.
SWB regimental number 6822.
A groom by trade.
Fresh complexion, Light brown hair, grey eyes. 5 foot 3 inches tall.
Aged 18 and 3 quarters when he enlisted on the 13th of August 1900 at Accrington.
He was born in Newton Le Willows. (Lancs)
He deserted on the 1st of October 1900 in Brecon.
The police record him having a cross heart tattoo on the back of right hand for identification purposes.

Best regards,
Dave

Looks like they found him!
1911 Census has Thomas as a Corporal.
Still serving in the SWB.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any medal rolls pertaining to Thomas, reference any service in S.A.
Perhaps fellow forummers may be able to help?

Agree no trace on medal rolls.

What evidence is their that he served in ABW?
