Good afternoon
QSA, no clasp, 59 PVT T.T. PONSONBY HUMANSDORP C.D.F.
WO100/281, (page 206 - 209) is titled GARRISON CDF HUMANSDORP and lists 76 names, of which 68 medals were issued 10th November 1905 to G.O.C. Cape Colony.
An analysis of the roll shows that of the 68 medals issued:
15 medals noted as returned
44 medals noted as being issued off other rolls, some of these being amongst the returns.
13 being the balance left, with no remarks as being issued off other rolls or returned.
This raises the question as to how many medals are named to HUMANSDORP C.D.F.
I have analysed the roll and entered this data into a spreadsheet and I am certain that only 13 medals were claimed and were named to this unit, as the two known examples are unannoted.on the roll.
Using known examples, of which I have found only 3 :
QSA impressed to 59 PVT T.T. PONSONBY HUMANSDORP C.D.F., private collection
QSA impressed to 19 PVT T. BILLSON HUMANSDORP C.D.F. sold at Spink
QSA impressed to 906 PTE G. BREWIS UITENHAGE V.R., sold DNW
PTE BREWIS also served as 20 PVT G. BREWIS HUMANSDORP C.D.F. but was issued off the Uitenhage Volunteer Rifles roll, and as such is noted on the Humansdorp C.D.F. roll, as "Issued off 1/5088" which is the AG/M/ number of the Uitenhage Volunteer Rifles.
I speculate that due to this, the 68 medals issued could not have all been named to Humansdorp C.D.F..
It would seem that only 13 medals exist named to the Humansdorp C.D.F., the bulk being issued off other rolls, as the QSA to Brewis proves. I stand to be corrected and welcome any further known examples or information.
There must have been quite some activity at Humansdorp during the War, as it also had its own Town Guard and a D.M.T.
Can't find any further information on the Garrison's role during the war.
If anybody has any further information or examples to the HUMANSDORP C.D.F., I would appreciate it.
Regards
Jon
