My name is Andrew Masterton and I've just joined this forum. My Great Grandfather was Walter Long ( Not the famous one! (apparently)) He was a Royal Canadian Mountie and he volunteered in Vancouver in 1901 and joined the SA Constabulary. I have his medals with the Cape Colony, Free State and Transvaal strips I believe he was stationed at Potchefstroom and then Pretoria. It seems that he may have received land as compensation?

I am looking for information or any guru that can assist to find out more of his service.

I was selling a book written by Jim Wallace but I am afraid it is now out of print...... You may find one on Echo Bay....

NO COLOURS, NO DRUMS, Canadians in the South African Constabulary, by Jim Wallace, Bunker to Bunker Press, 2003 (First Edition), ISBN 1-894255-27-5.

But you can also check here.....

There are several more SAC articles...... Go to search the last in the line there and type in Constabulary.....

Walter Emsley Long born 1876 Bow, Middlesex appears on several public family trees on Ancestry. 1881 living in East Barnet & 1891 in Toronto. One states that in Feb 1901 he joined the Strathcona Horse Regiment to fight in the Boer War but offers no proof to back up the statement. Some have him married (at an unknown date) to a Johanna Mathieson Young who died in Johannesburg in 1964. None of them have a date & place of death for Walter. Some have pictures of Walter including a wonderful group photo of the Pretoria District Police taken in 1924 - lots of medals on display which I think include some QSA's but impossible to be certain. However plain clothed detective Walter Long does not have a medal. The source of their photos is Andrew Masterton. Andrew - even though it is over 20 years after the Boer War definitely worthy of posting here.

Mike - the Walter Long you found deserted on 12/12/1879 and not in 1912.
