Hello to all.
I have been sorting through old family photo's and documents, and have come across some interesting reading. I am looking for any information about my great grandfather W Brooks, who lived and worked in Kimberley in the late 1800's - early 1900's. I have attached an old letter and photo. I am sure that he served during the Boer War... I hope to find some more information on his site.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.
Thanks, Kimi

Welcome to the Forum. Our host's book "Kimberley Siege Account and medal roll" lists several "W.Brooks" who served in the Kimberley Town Guard. Your GGF may/may not have been one of them. Can you supply more information about his possible ABW military career? BTW, the pic of the letter you mentioned did not come through.
Regards
IL.

Hi Linneyl,

Unfortunately, I can only assume that he may have served with a mounted unit (as seen in photo). I believe his name was William, His son (my grandfather), Arthur Edward Brooks attended a school in Beaconsfield, Kimberley around 1900. I know that he later became a member of the Transvaal Scottish (I have his discharge papers). I have attached the photo of the letter and envelope.

Two of the KTG Pte. W. Brooks are shown in the Kimberley Siege book as having a connection with the Kamfersdam Company. One, Pte. William Thomas Brooks, also served in the C-in-C Bodyguard from 31/10/1900 until 24/2/1901 and earned several clasps on his QSA medal. That one is just a possibility until you can get a link. If you have your GGF's Transvaal Scottinh papers, they may contain a reference to units previously served with.
Good luck with your quest.

Since your Grandfather was in school in Beaconsfield he may have gotten this medallion:
