1398 PTE J. FLYNN. IMPL : LT INFY.

At first glance an odd clasp combination to the Imperial Light Infantry, a unit more known for its exploits on the Natal front.

However John Flynn initially served with Rimington's Guides from 23rd October 1899 till his discharge from Damant's Horse on 28th April 1900, "to take up duties on railway" earning the first 5 clasps on his medal. As is quite common with Colonials he moved and enlisted in the I. L. I., and served with the rank of L/Cpl from 16th April 1901 to 23rd July 1901. Finally attesting shortly after his discharge, his final period of service from 9th August 1901 to 7th July 1902 was as a Farrier Sergeant with 1st Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, where he earned the Transvaal clasp. All rolls checked and clasps confirmed.

A KSA was issued off 1st KFS roll, and I was able to purchase the lot from the recent Spink sale. Was glad to reunite the two, it doesn't happen often.

Well spotted Jon. Any reunite is special so very well done. As collectors with the odd missing medal we have always to keep our eyes and ears wide open. You never know when luck could be heading your way.

I have a very scarce WWII AFM group to a South African. Thanks to Adrian Ellard whose vigilance knew no bounds, I was able to unite a wad of original photos and documents with the group.

That is excellent, Jon and, as you say, very unusual clasps to the ILI.
