Hi everyone

Thought id say hi, im currently researching the life of my great grandfather, Ernest Smith; the many twists and turns brought me here!

My father never knew his grandfather, he died ten years before he was born and he was never spoken about. I started researching about 10 years basically with no info!!!

This week found my great grandfathers militia records which mention South Africa in 1902 as part of 5th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regt.

His militia records mention a South Africa medal.

Cant find any mention of him in the records so wondered if anyone had any ideas where i go next?

Cant wait to find out more about the Anglo Boer War and speak to you more on the subject

A warm welcome to the Forum and good luck with your research.
If you could add Ernest's number from his military records I can have a look on Ancestry's medal rolls for you, difficult to find it just by name, quite a few Smiths!

Thanks for the welcome Paul, Ernest's regimental number was 6762, he was in south Africa between 1901 and 1902... I'm guessing he was part of the final moves/ clear up operation. I'm thinking he qualified for qsa with south Africa 1902 clasp. Trying to find out more about the 5th militia battalion Royal Warwickshire Regt, not doing too well up til now though

Thanks guys, very much appreciated, where did u find the info? I managed to find 8 records from findmypast but they only mentioned the briefest of info on his actual service records

im trying to look up the particular actions the 5th militia battalion Royal Warks Regt were directly involved in; not having much luck.

Did the militia fight as a unit or were they employed on garrison duties or were they integrated into other regiments?

My Boer War research only came about from one line of my great grandfathers WW1 service record which simply said 'time expired' with reference to previous service.

Im still ploughing through previous ABW posts so please bare with me if the answer to my post have already been explained
