hi All,
My interest is in my grandfather's service in the Scots Guards during the Boer War, and in particular a unit nicknamed "Blundell's Greyhounds" which is mentioned in his obituary. Does any one know anything about this unit? I have been unable to find any other references.
As back ground , my Grand father was batman to the Earl of Dalhousie, who, according to Wikipedia " Lord Dalhousie left Port Natal with other men of the 2nd battalion Scots Guards on the SS Michigan in late September 1902, arriving at Southampton in late October' There is a "Times" reference to his sailing for South Africa which I cannot currently locate. These dates would give the time limits for any references.
From my grandfather's medals the location would appear to be Transvaal or Orange Free State.

Hoping someone can shed some light on Blundell's Greyhounds.

Thank you for your response.

My grandfathers full name was William John Davis . He enlisted in the Scots Guards at Windsor 25 March 1895 Service number 676. His Boer War overseas service was from 1May 1901 to 27 October 1902.
My interest however is in the so called Blundells Greyhounds , mentioned in his obituary.

Welcome to the forum, tafside,

Your question is proving difficult to research and answer.

I can find no mention of Blundell's Greyhounds in any context.

No officer of the Scot's Guards was named so. There was a lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards who was killed at Belmont, Wilfred Blundell-Hollinshead-Blundell. The Scots Guars were at Belmont so this is a possible connection but unlikely?

What does his obituary say please?

Hello Tarfside
David has mentioned the Blundell who was with the Grenadier Guards. On further research it seems that the Blundell family were connected to Greyhound racing and coursing.
I have enclosed a report from the 1916 Waterloo Greyhound cup. It mentions Blundell.
Also there was a 2nd Lieutenant Cuthbert Leigh Blundell who was also a Grenadier.
Later in the 1920s and into WW2 a Captain C V R Blundell served in the Scots Guards.
Now all we have to do is find the connection to your Grandfather. But in my humble opinion it may be connected to the above family.

Dave......

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Hello Tarfside, and a warm welcome to the ABW forum.
I was very interested to see the surname Blundell mentioned, especially as Dave F has shed a bit more light on your enquiry.
I have a QSA medal to Trooper Stanley Whittaker Moss-Blundell who served with the Natal Police during the conflict.
He was born, if memory serves me well, in Lancashire and ended up being a fruit grower in Evesham, Worcestershire.
If you should find any link to my man, I would be very grateful to know. A bit of a tenuous link perhaps, but you never know!
Cheers Steve
