CHAPTER HOUSE,
GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL,
12 COLLEGE GREEN,
GLOUCESTER,
GL1 2LX.

Gloucester Cathedral is located near to the city centre with ample parking nearby.

It really is a spectacular building set within the College Green, the interior architecture will not fail to impress the visitor to this 11th Century house of worship, and neither will the numerous memorials and tombs to be found therein.

And now back to our search for the bronze Boer War memorial panels. I could not find them in the main public areas, so made enquiries with the cathedral volunteers who were only too happy to help me in my quest.
The memorial panels are located beneath the east window in Chapter House. This area is not accessible to the public and is used for conference and as an educational room for children's events. Without the permission of the volunteers I would have been unable to access the Chapter House and consequently unable to photograph and catalogue the memorial. It really does pay not to be shy and ask!

The east window, Chapter House, bronze panels below.

Below the east window are fourteen panels set into pillared masonry frameworks. There is also a more recently added fifteenth bronze panel in the same style on the returning wall to the right. Next to this an index of the names on the panels within a glass fronted wooden case.

The inscription on all of the panels is in a highly stylised, attractive font. This does make some of the initials a tad tricky to read. But with the aid of the index, the visitor can get easily by.

Running across the tops of the fourteen panels is a continuous script as follows:
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE, THE COUNTY REGIMENT WHO FELL IN THE WAR IN S.AFRICA 1899-1902"

To post images of each panel and the names and regiments inscripted on each panel, I will deal with them three panels at a time, numbering them 1 through to 15 from left to right. It is my hope that this will make the reader's referencing from my writing to my images 'user friendly.'

Panel 14 - Lieutenant Guy Herle Irvine

Steve - the ornate lettering has led you astray as he was Guy Harle Irvine. Harle being his mother's maiden name. Guy along with his siblings was born in India.

Here is the report of his death in the Yorkshire Evening Post of 3 April 1900

Subsequent editions, of this and other papers, report that they had mis-reported and Lt F S Irvine was Lt G H Irvine and that he died at Sanna's Post.

Was there a WW1 Memorial with names? If so, it should bear the name of Guy's younger brother, Captain Paget George Irvine of 6th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment who was killed in France in November 1915. The CWGC record gives the following additional info " Son of the late Surgeon-Maj. George Nicol Irvine, A.M.D. and Mrs. Mary Irvine." which explains the births in India.

Two for the price of one from the Gloucestershire Echo of 3 May 1900

Needless to say we learn more about the officer than the OR.

J Tracton Dennis appears on panel 13 - the ornate lettering has understandably led you astray again. Here is his probate record which agrees with the article:

He was born on 7 Feb 1878 at Drunlechney, Carlow, Ireland but by the 1881 Census the family had moved to Cheltenham. The 1881 & 1891 Census returns show his father (Robert and born in India) was a retired military officer living off his investments.

Pte A King appears on Panel 9.

Davidh- you have a nice selection of casualty medals there in your collection. Thank you for posting details.

David (Smethwick)-this would certainly be a long term project with 476 (by my count) names on these panels. I've been on the Birmingham memorial on and off for over two years and nowhere near the end!
The Glostermen certainly had more than their fair share of casualties during the conflict.
I also feel the pain of the folk that transcribed the original medal rolls to impress the rims of all those 500,000 or so QSAs. Owing to much copperplate and stylised handwriting it is easy to see how so many errors with initials, numbers and surnames were made during the process!
Having said that, the panels in Chapter House are a beautiful piece of work!
