Hello everyone, I am new to this area of research. I'd like to understand how to source information on a family member. Understanding the system would seem as important as finding info itself. Can anyone enlighten me as to the best approach?
Many thanks

Hi David, many thanks for your reply. My Great Grandfather was William Henry Turner, a Lance Sergeant in the RAMC, joining in 1891 and subject to a medical discharge in 1901, due to ill health. I would like to find info on his activity during those 10 years.

Nikonitis,

On the RAMC roll is 5200 Staff Sgt W H Turner who served on the hospital shop, Trojan. He earned the QSA with clasps Orange Free State, Transvaal and Natal. But he also earned the KSA with both clasps which means he was still serving on 1 January 1902.

There is another man who is a better match.

9353 Corporal W H Turner, RAMC. He earned the QSA with clasps Orange Free State, Transvaal, Relief of Ladysmith, Tugela Heights and Laing's Nek. He was invalided to England 3 April 1901.

You are in luck. There are service papers for him. Born 1873 in Blackburn. Enlisted 1891 as you say. The service papers will give you a good view of what he did for those 10 years.

The papers are not available on this site but they are available for a fee at FindMyPast.

Best wishes
David

That is marvellous and so quick!! Thankyou so much for doing that. The second one is, without question, my relative as his service no 9353, matches the paperwork I have. Interesting that your search lists him as being a Corporal, where as his discharge papers list him as being a Lance Sergeant. Can I ask where you came by all that information? That interests me as much, to learn.
