David Francis regimental number 1890
Also served with the Bechuanaland Border Police at Macloustie.
Which does tie in with him leaving Wales circa 1893/94.

Many thanks Dave, yes this is the information I have. Unfortunately I cant seem to find a family in Wales earlier with a David and Walter as brothers of about that age.

According to his military death record he was single.
I would love to see his papers for sailing to South Africa!
I cant give a name to his parents because I cant find link to a brother called Walter.
No connection to a family called Rees at this time.

Many thanks for your help!

This maybe why you are having trouble with David's family?
This may or may not be your David Francis. However, it is a possibility.
A new start in South Africa after joining the Welsh milita? Now all we need is to find his brother Walter.;)

I will post the shipping record over the weekend. There are differences in age but it was the only record that came close to your David Francis.

The shipping record I found for your records.
Unfortunately the birth dates do not match your David who was aged 40 when he died at Mafeking. However, this was the only information I could locate reference D Francis and transportation to South Africa. As for Walter, I'm afraid I cannot find any relevant information. I found one attestation paper for a Walter Francis who also joined the Welsh milita, but the records suggest he was discharged in 1902. Also at present, no luck connecting the 2 brothers during their time in Glamorgan. It is looking very possible the family may have suffered a tragedy and the 2 brothers were orphaned . My apologies for not providing a better answer to your original post. If you should come across any additional clues or family information, please let the forum know.

Best regards

Dave......
