Hi, I’m interested to find out more about the British South African police. A great uncle served with them and family rumour said he died in South Africa during the Boer War. His name was Thomas William Waters. I’ve found various things about him on Ancestry.co.uk but interested to know more in general. I’ll enjoy reading what this website has to offer. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.
I had a quick look in the Palmer Casualty roll for a "T.Waters" (or close approximation of same name) for the BSAP and did not find an entry. At times, family rumour can be a bit misleading. There is a good outline of the activities of the BSAP in the book section in the panel at the left of this reply; look under Stirling for "The Colonials in South Africa".
On medal roll WO100/238 page 56 for the BSAP No.2 Div., Bulawayo is an entry for what appears to be "1474 Tpr. T.W.Waters" with medal clasps Cape Colony and Transvaal. The initials "T.W" are a little hard to read but that is what they look like to me.
Regards
IL.

Hi Ferret18

Welcome to the forum.
As mentioned by Linneyl regarding your Great Uncle and his QSA medal entitlement. As well as the Cape Colony, Transvaal clasp mentioned in IL's post, your G Uncle was also entitled to the 2 date clasps 1901-1902.
Ancestry has 3 entries for Trooper Waters 1474.
See attached info. Slight deviation on Christian name initials.
The 1474 G W Waters medal roll confirms date clasps and was dated 1904 Bulawayo.

Regards

Dave......

Thanks Linneyl
I couldn't see either Stirling or "The Colonials in South Africa" in the book section - am I looking in the right place?
Thank you for consulting the Palmer casualty roll - as you say family rumour/recall can differ from the truth.
The info you found re. the medal and clasps is the information I also found on Ancestry.co.uk
Thanks again
