Hello,
Thanks to the administrators for allowing me to join this Forum.
My family have had very little information passed down about my great grandfather, George Atkins. What we know is that he served in the Irish Rifles Regiment and was at the rank of sergeant when my grandfather was born in Deolali Camp, India, in 1896. We think his father died a few years later in the Boer War, though this has never been confirmed.
I hope to be able to find some more details about my ancestor through this Forum.
Bob

Hello Bob
Welcome to the forum.
Your Great Grandfather did serve in the Anglo Boer War
He was a Sergeant, regimental number 3729. 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles.
Killed in action 1901. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and the 1901 date clasp. His personal effects were left to his widow Maggie.

Dave.........
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Hello Dave,
Thank you very much for your very detailed information about my great grandfather, and dare I say, in such a fantastically short time. Thanks!
The info you supplied me with ties in very well with a copy from the register of baptism of my grandfather, which lists my great grandmother as Margareth which, of course, is Maggie.
My grandfather was only a toddler when his father died.
Thank you for sorting that out for me and my family.

Hello Elmarie,
Thank you for your information regarding the mentioning of my great grandfather on the memorial in Antrim. Suddenly, because of him, I feel I belong somewhere .... and there's a certain degree of pride.
