Sgt-Major Bernard Malim Bowen 1 year 9 months ago #88654

I am writing a family history of Bernard. I was so moved to visit his grave at Caversham last month and to see his 40 or so love letters at Talerna Museum. Someone said he had been mentioned in regard to some medals. Any ideas?
The letters include a huge one from the siege. Philip Bowen

Hello Philip
Welcome to the forum.
With regard to your question pertaining to medals mentioned?
I found this entry for your records.

As for Sergeant Major BM Bowen's own entitlement, I could only find his QSA single clasp Defence of Ladysmith.

Dave........
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Is he one and the same as Bernard Malim Bowen born in Bilston (in the Black Country and famous for its enamels) in 1868, enlisted aged 18 in the 3rd Dragoon Guards in Wednesbury (also Black Country), service number 2811? Then served in the E Indies and Natal before being discharged, apparently medal less but time served, in Natal in 1898. If so his service records, discharge papers and medical records covering this period of his life can be found on Find My Past.

I presume there is a Caversham in S Africa as well as the one that is in effect a suburb of Reading in the UK.

That is tremendous! Thank you so much. Yes, he is buried at Caversham in Kwa Zulu, presumably named after the place near Reading. indebted to you Philip
