Is there documentation of activities or actions down to a Company level?

Researching the activities of units down to Company level at an action/engagement can be difficult and sometimes luck comes into it. For example, the attestation papers of Thorneycroft's M.I. show the Company to which a man was allocated - but that is not much help as, at Spion Kop, volunteers from all Companies of TMI were called for and participated. If one is fortunate, the depth of research may throw up a Company/Squadron allocation for some chap who was a casualty or came to notice at a particular action/engagement. I have had that happen on several occasions.
British Regimental histories can on occasion be of considerable assistance - as a couple I have accessed list men by Company. And, should a man have the misfortune to be wounded - say - at Belmont, and a Regimental history shows his company allocation to have been "B", then we may assume that that Company took an active part. And sometimes we just have to assume that a medal clasp entitlement means that a man took an active part.
Dig deep, consult others of this Forum on special tasks - and Good Luck!
Regards
IL.

I find the regimental history or batallion history will often describe the activities of the companies on certain days.
Give us some clues and we may be able to help?
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

A work in progress, my grandfather John Holmes Logan, Seaforth Highlanders was wounded at Magersfontein and at some point taken prisoner by the Boers and not released until around mid September of 1900. Trying to find out if his capture was at the same time or later. The regiment went on further actions, Trying to find out if John Holmes was in those later actions.
