TOPIC:

My grandfather Simon Haugh, born in Liverpool November 1880 fought in the Boer War. I know little of his service but he was involved in caring for horses and was apparently asked to remain in South Africa to do that at the end of the War. He didn't take up the offer and returned to Liverpool. If anyone can give me guidance on how to start my research I would appreciate it.

He also fought in WW1 I understand as a Gunner.

Have you access to Ancestry or Find My Past?
If yes, there are military files pertaining to a Simon Haugh. Who was born in Lancashire.
Was your Grandfather's parents called James and Ann ?
If yes, then your Grandfather served in the Cheshire Regiment during the Boer war and then went on to the Royal Garrison Artillery during WW1. If this is your man? There are papers for both conflicts. His service number for the Cheshire's was 5829 and the RGA 9625.
He served 12 years in the Cheshire Regiment and nearly 3 of those were in South Africa.
His medal roll is also available for the South Africa campaign. I hope I have the right chap.

Thank you so much for the info. You're spot on. Not sure how you managed that in the back of a taxi but I'm delighted. I'm on Ancestry but couldn't access anything. Hopefully the info you've provided will prove useful.
My grandfather became deaf due to one of the Wars he was involved in. He used to talk about the Wars but as a young child I didn't take in as much as I now wish I had and it was difficult to hold a two way conversation.
