HOUSE FOR SALE!

"Pretoria", Pretoria Terrace, off Balaclava Road, Caernarfon, North Wales.

I have no connection with either the house owner not the estate agent!!

Obviously, Caernarfon was very patriotic back in the day with reference to Balaclava aswell!

History is all around us!!

Steve – I saw your post late last night and within ten minutes, using the Census Address Search facility on Find My Past, identified the occupants of 1-10 Pretoria Terrace in 1901, 1911, 1921 & 1939. From the class of occupants (not a labourer amongst them as far as I could see) and the six rooms listed for each in 1911 (above average for Edwardian terrace houses) definitely desirable residences. The occupants included quite a few railway men including a station master and a couple of mariners one of whom titled himself “master mariner”. You could do a David Olusoga type investigation times ten! Regards, David.

It would be interesting to see who the residents were. Who knows maybe a Boer War veteran amongst them?
Caernarfon was certainly patriotic back in the day with the South African memorial in a prominent position on a hill (before the woodland grew around it).
Also, I believe there to be another plaque/tablet of some description in a building that doubles as an am-dram venue and evening bistro. Always closed when I get there!lol!
Cheers Steve
