William Woolmore's book, Steinaecker's Horsemen states that Trooper David Chatcuff was British and had served previously as 214584 Pte. in Marshall's Horse from 6 December 1900 to 25 June 1901 adn as 152 Pte. in the Midland Mounted Rifles from 15 July 1901 to 16 January 1902. He enlisted in Steinaecker's Horse at East London on 15 February 1902. He was a designer and was 5'5" with brown hair and eyes. Next of Kin was his father at 31 Manhattan Ave, Brooklyn, NY, USA. He was KIA near Haenertsburg on 16 April 1902 and is buried at Foot of Iron Crown Mountain on Boschoff's Farm near Haernertsburg in grave No. 111. He qualified for the QSA with CC, OFS, TR, SA01 and SA02 clasps. His grave is confirmed in Steve Watt's In Memorium: Roll of Honour Imperial Forces Anglo Boer War 1899-1902.

He was re-interred according to an entry on Find-a-Grave:

He can also be found on 3 medal rolls on Ancestry along with the record of his Soldier's Effects.

Thank you so very much. I do have a copy of Steinaecker's Horse. Also, thanks to Smethwick for information on Pvt. Chatcuff's re-interment in Polokwane. At present, I am most interested in how my great-uncle arrived in South Africa and enlisted in Marshall's Horse. Was he recruited in NYC? Any references, books, etc, that could help me with that part of my search? Thank you again. Richard Chatcuff.
