Pvt. G. Brown 4818 was wounded at Ramah on 11.02.1900 when Col. Hannay's 5th Mounted Infantry engaged OVS commando's in hills close to the farm. (Windpomp)

He died in the farmhouse while being nursed by the Attwell family and is still buried where he was laid to rest.

My interest is the part of the Worcestershire Regiment that became a part of Hannay's MI.

Any light on this will be most welcome.

4818 G Brown served in the 2nd Battalion Worceter Regiment. The 1901 QSA Medal Roll for the 2nd Worcesters indicates those who also served in the 5th Mounted Infantry. This example shows 3 such:

My interest in this page is the man killed in action bottom but one. Afraid none of "my" other 10 Smethwickians who served in the 2nd Worcesters received the "5th MI" annotation.

Thank you!
Where do I access the medal roll? I cant find it in the Unit information on this site. Am I looking in the wrong section?

The 5th MI spent 2 nights on the farm and took casualties.
I'm interested in the units and men who made up this group.

I have the diary of Lt. Lambton 5th MI Worcestershire Regt. They had arrived straight from Cape Town (Maitland) at Orange River Station on 02.20.1900
At Ramah were two officers, 50 men and 70 horses of the Worcestershire Reg on 11.02.1900. .
Casualties were; "One killed, Capt. Holland slightly wounded."
I assume the one killed was 4818 Brown.

The National Archives in London hold the originals under ref no WO 100/184.

However, they can be viewed on line via Ancestry. Do you subscribe to Ancestry? If not, if all you are after is the number of 2nd Worcesters who served in the 5th Mounted Infantry I would be happy to work that for you, along with their name, initial, rank & regimental number.

Morning Chris,

Progress to date - there are 1308 rank & file listed on the 1901 Medal Roll. There is also a 1903 Supplementary Medal Roll bearing 319 names but, thankfully, none of these have the "To 5th MI" accolade.

I have looked at the nearly 160 with surnames beginning with A & B and 15 have the "To 5th MI" accolade. That is just under 10% so I suspect the final number will be circa 125.

They are all Privates except one Colour-Sergeant and 12 have 3 clasps to their QSA - namely Witt, CC & Tr. The other 3 only have the CC & OFS clasps.

Full report to follow - David.
