Good Morning everyone

I am messaging the group in hope of some information.

After my father and mother died I came into possession of my Great Great Grandfathers war medals which after a google search of one brought me to your site.
Neither my father or uncles ever talk about him and I was wondering if anyone on here might be able to give me any information.

His name was George Henry Hartley born 1880
from his medals he has three numbers the first and second are I believe is the St. John's Ambulance numbers

This is what is written on the side of his medals

1036 Pte G.H.Hartley Barnoldswick Div

1036 ORDERLY G.H. HARTLEY ST JOHN AMB BDE This one has the "Natal" Clasp

2482 Amb. Off. G.H.HARTLEY (BARNOLDSWICK) DIV 5 DIST SJAB 1922

23218 A.S.SJT G.H.HARTLEY R.A.M.C.

23218 A.S SJT G.H. HARTLEY R.A.M.C

Any help or advice on his service will be greatly appreciated

David,

That is a very nice group of medals.

Your GGF is listed on three Boer War rolls.

The first (WO100/225p173) suggests he served for a time at No 21 General Hospital, an 800 bed facility in Deelfontein that was open 5 Apr 01 to 31 May 02. This roll also suggests entitlement to the South Africa 1902 clasp. While he served in Cape Colony, the regulations prevented the Cape Colony and Natal clasps being awarded to the same man.

The next entry (WO100/225p180) shows his Natal clasp and says he served in No 14 Stationery Hospital.

No 14 SH was based in Pietermaritzburg, had and 150 beds and operated (no pun intended) throughout the war, 13 Oct 99 to 31 May 02.

The third entry (WO100/225p123) list his Natal clasp and link to No 14 SH.

There is an undated image of men from the SJAB Barnoldswick, Lancashire, here: redrosecollections.lancashire.gov.uk/vie...&WINID=1726820368476

I cannot find his Great War papers (which may not exist). There are two men of this name, born c 1880, but neither served in the RAMC as far as I can see.

Best wishes
David

Thank you so much,

These are the total medals I have.

Do you think he should have been awarded another clasp at all?

Hello David
I believe the Natal clasp is the only one awarded to George.
The medal roll error pertains to a J E Hartley 1766 and his Cape Colony entitlement. The initials on the roll suggests they mixed up the G H with the J E.
However, there is a WW1 Victory medal absent from your collection. George was awarded the British War and Victory medal for his service as an acting Sergeant in the RAMC. He was discharged in June 1919. His WW1 pension records him suffering from chronic bronchitis.

Regards

Dave.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave
