82 REGIMENTAL SERGEANT -MAJOR WILLIAM DOYLE: BUSHMANLAND BORDERERS
William Doyle first saw service in the Anglo Boer War with the Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles with the service numbers 496/476 as Transport Corporal.
Following service with Dukes, he became 4051 Transport Corporal in Kitchener's Horse on 18th December 1900 till discharged time expired in April 1901.
His next attestation was to Warren's Mounted Infantry on 29th April 1901 having been given the rank of Squadron Sergeant Major with number 584. This seniority in rank was obviously appropriate following his service and experience with Kitchener's Horse.
His attestation to Warren's Mounted Infantry tells us that he was 33 years of age, born in 1868 and enlisted at Cape Town. He was a Baker by profession and his next of kin was his wife residing at 30 Russell Street, Cape Town.
He took his discharge from Warren's MI on 18th July 1901.
William attested to the Bushmanland Borderers at Calvinia on 18th January 1902 becoming 82 Regimental Sergeant Major.
On disbandment of the unit he was discharged at Eindekruil on 9th July 1902, his character described as "good". He had served 173 days with the BB.
H address after discharge being P.O. Johannesburg, Transvaal.
For his war service he was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal with clasps Cape Colony, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and Wittebergen.
Also the King's South Africa medal with both date clasps.
KSA awarded to 82 R.S.M. William Doyle.
Rank and naming to the rim.
Regimental naming to the rim.
I have a sneaking suspicion that I have seen his QSA out there, so it could still possibly be extant.
