I have three casings, two .303's and one Muser 7×57, which I found in the veld. They were all found in British camps in the Karoo, namely around Prince Albert and Sutherland, areas in which Smuts and his commando were known to operate. My casings have uncommon headstamps and I would like to find out more about them. The mauser casing has a live primer, but the casing itself is shredded, I believe due to being thrown in a fire. One of the .303's was made in India. The .303 casings are marked Mk VI and Mk VII, marks I thought were postwar. Than you.

Photos of the headstamps are shown below:

I believe the .303 Mk VI was introduced on January 29, 1904 and the Mk VII in 1910, so I'm pretty sure the first two are post-ABW. However, I am no expert. LinneyI and Rob D are better equipped to give you a well-informed answer.

The Mauser, on the other hand, is on the money. Ron Bester lists it as a sporting "Round-nose, lead-tipped" round (made by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken, Karlsruhe, Germany).

Exactly as Neville said!
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
