Thank you so much I had not seen that before. I knew he died young. There seems to a lot of my family that relied on GWR for employment my great Grandfather was a bricklayer and worked and lived in Winchcombe . St Anns was the family home for that branch of the Large Family for quite some time. If there is anything I can ever do to help you please let me know

David - William Large - cradle to grave:

Charlton Kings Baptism record:

Probate:

The inclusion of birth dates on the baptism record was the officiating clergyman admonishing your great-great grandparents for exposing Fanny (especially) & William to everlasting purgatory for an unnecessarily long time.

Looking at his attestation papers William added a year to his age when he attested.

Although your great-great grandfather was a "labourer" on the baptism record by the time of the 1891 Census he was a "Railway Plate Layer"

William went out to St Helena on requisitioned troop ship no 91 the Orotava as shown by this extract from the shipping records on this site:

London Times, 01 Jan 01 (Tuesday)
The Orotava left Southampton yesterday for St Helena and South Africa with 49 officers, 5 civil surgeons, 2 chaplains, 3 nursing sisters, and 644 men. Listed were:
Gloucestershire – (for service at St Helena) 251 men
RAMC – 164 men
RE – 20 men

These links should take you to photos and other info about the Orotava to be found on this site:

Not sure how much of all the paperwork mentioned above you already have - if you message me your email address happy to email you everything I have.

Regards, David.

David - email just sent. As I am a new correspondent for you and it has 12 attachments, if it does not appear shortly in your inbox best to check your spam box. Cannot find any service records for 5573 S Bartlett - battalions were several hundred strong and even approaching a 1,000. Regards, David.
