My name is David Large, and I recently found out my Great grandfather's brother served in the Boer war and also guarded Boer Prisoners on St Helena Island. See attached a replica display I have done with the knowledge I have so far. I know the badges may not be correct time period but are all I have. Always on the lookout to see if his medal ever pops up.

Regards
David Large

Welcome to the Forum David.

One of "my" Smethwickians served in the 4th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and guarded Boer prisoners on St Helena. He, along with most of the rest of the 4th Battalion, never went anywhere near S Africa and hence ended up with a QSA with no clasps. So your great-great uncle serving in the Gloucestershire Regiment and earning 3 clasps and guarding prisoners on St Helena intrigued me. Having now found the Boer War service records for 6046 William Large on Find My Past all is clear. He enlisted in the 2nd Btn but after a month of home service he was transferred to the 4th Btn and posted to St Helena. Another 13 months on he was transferred back to the 2nd Btn and set sail for South Africa just in time to take part in the last 4 months of the conflict.

Regards, David.

Hello David

Welcome to the forum.

I wonder who guarded your Great Grandfathers brother whilst on St Helena ?;)

Dave.......

PS. He was Invalided home from his time served in India. He was sent to India from South Africa and returned home in 1904.

Best regards,
Dave

Thank you for your information The Boer war has always interested me but is not my area of expertise having focused on my immediate family line. So was quite interested to discover this. I was wondering if I have all of his entitlement correct?
I wondered why he was not eligible for the KSA or the 1901 clasp? As I say I am no expert here.

Thanks so much again

Looks like he was a bit of a naughty boy and yes Ha Ha if he had a mate guarding him.

Thanks for this I love history and now to find out an ancestor had a part in this conflict it makes me want to learn more
