Hello,

I just joined as I am trying to find pictures of John George Harry Hamilton who took part in the Boer War. I hope I found the correct section for such a question.

I have tried to find pictures on the net, but have not had any luck. I was therefore hoping that someone here could help me. I have however found very much information about him here, very grateful for that. :)

I have found that John George Harry Hamilton was born 6 August 1869 in Aberdeenshire. He entered the Army as Second Lieutenant, Royal Highlanders (2nd Battalion), 8 October 1890. He was promoted Lieutenant 3 November 1892 and became Captain 12 December 1899. He served in the South African War, 1899-1902.

All the best,

Max

Max - are you sure he was born in Aberdeenshire?

This chap was born on 6th August 1869 but in the Wavertree area of Liverpool:

JOHN GEORGE HARRY HAMILTON of Skene,
Brigadier General, DSO, DL JP,
The Black Watch, Royal Highlanders.
Died 25 September 1945 aged 76.

If I have the right chap, his very detailed records regarding service in the Boer War have survived and can be downloaded from Find My Past and this is him later in 1938:

Many thanks for the information and the picture! I will check Find My Past. As for his birthplace, I have not checked the sources. You are however probably right regarding his birthplace. I took it for granted that he was born in Aberdeenshire when it said "of Skene":
