Hi all,
Have just joined from Dublin, Ireland.
Am the great grandson of above named who served in South Africa from 1899 -1902. Have managed to obtain his papers from the National Archives some years back. Suppose I would like some guidance to see if there is any photograpic evidence of him / his regiment etc. and where to source if possible.
Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Robert - A belated welcome to the Forum.

Was your great-grandfather 3269 Henry Griffiths? - born in "Carnarvon" and attestation papers & service records findable on Find My Past. If so, medal rolls, findable on Ancestry, show he served in the 1st Battalion and was awarded the King's South Africa Medal (with both date clasps) & the Queen's South Africa Medal with 3 clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State & Transvaal.

You can find out more about the RMF in the Unit Information section on this site including four photos.

Regards, David (Smethwick).

Robert

You can inspect the medals rolls relevant to his two medals. Under 'Research' on this site you can see how to search the records at the UK National Archives.

Best regards
Peter

Welcome to the Forum Robert.

I’m glad that others are assisting you. The Unit page on this site mentioned above is here:

www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/im...al-munster-fusiliers

The Royal Munster Fusiliers were only in existence for a relatively short time and are known as the forgotten regiment. There doesn’t seem to be a Regimental Museum but there are several sites of interest on the internet.

The National Army Museum website displays an article here:

www.nam.ac.uk/explore/royal-munster-fusiliers

I hope this helps and hopefully David has located your ancestors’ records.

If you search this site for Royal Munster Fusiliers you will see every link available and some will lead you to where the Regiment is mentioned in various books, which is an excellent way of finding out what your ancestor got up to.

The Naval & Military press sell a history of the Regiment. I haven’t read it myself, but the description says that it does focus on WW1, but might be useful:
