I would agree that this is a M.I for Mounted Infantry.

I’ve downloaded the Boer War chapter from the history. It looks very informative.

Hi Smethwick,
Thanks a million for that, that is summit very interesting!! A new possible piece to the puzzle. What is interesting is his son, my grandfather John Griffiths (born Dublin, 1873 - 1945) was in the 2nd Reserve Cavalry Regiment, joining in 1916 and after serving 2 years 347 (!) days was discharged on 13.3.1919. Mebbe horses run in the family!!

Hi David,

That Essex link that you highlighted is very intriguing, the more info. the more confusing. Have that photocopy of his military sheet in front of me. Had seen before, but never made a connection. When I look at the entry for next of kin, I see "uncle"!. Now, he has no uncle John on his father's side, have checked the census records back over the centurty. His father was John (birth cert. )But his mother was Catherine Griffith (birth cert). So mebbe a maternal uncle? Google mapped the address 4 Kelland road, Plaistow, still exists, but obviously refurbished. So can I presume this was the address given upon enlistment?
But what I find odd, is s the address listed, of name and address of next of kin, even though the sheet goes up to and includes 1902. And all the while, he has a wife and childer back in Dublin? All the documents I have here prove his existence in Dublin, address etc and resultant nuptials and birth records of kids. Is it normal that the army record just keep with the enlistment address?

Very interesting.

Agree it does say his Uncle John Griffiths lived at 4 Kelland Road. Not sure I can help although I think I may now have found Henry at 3 months old on the 1871 Census with a quarryman father. It appears attached to a public family tree and the creator of the tree thinks his mother started out life as Catherine Jones.

Hi David,
That sounds right. I have that record myself with his birth cert etc. Sourced that many years back. Am curious about what you say about the Jones connection. My version of birth cert says her maiden name was Griffith !!. When you say it is atached to a public family tree, is there a name of the person who cretaed this or is it just a table? When I got the census stuff years back, I went through ancestry.co.uk. But is it open access now? Here in Ireland the 1901 and 1911 census data is now free to view by the public online, aswll as births / marriages and deaths, baptismal etc. If you are interested in this stuff for any of your research, can forward the link.
